Kristen Bell may be all smiles on the outside, but she just shared what’s really going on behind her bubbly exterior in this emotional interview.
Kristen Bell may put up a cheery front, but in a recent interview with Off Camera, she revealed the dark struggles behind her smiles.
“Im extremely codependent. I shatter a little bit when I think people dont like me,” she admitted. “Part of why I lead with kindness and I compensate by being very bubbly all the time is because, I dont know, it really hurts my feelings when Im not liked, and I know thats not very healthy, and I fight it all the time.”
In a society where mental illness is stigmatized, Kristen Bell is boldly speaking out about her battles with anxiety and depression in order to show others that they don’t need to be ashamed.
When Kristen was 18 years old, her mother warned her that serotonin imbalances ran in their family, and she encouraged Kristen from early on to seek help if she ever needed it.
If you do decide to go on a prescription to help yourself, understand that the world wants to shame you for that, but in the medical community, you would never deny a diabetic his insulin,” her mother said. “But for some reason when someone needs a serotonin inhibitor, theyre immediately crazy or something.”
On top of doing “a lot of introspective work,” Kristen takes her anxiety and depression medication regularly, and she says it’s really helped her over the years. Regardless of how the public perceives the misunderstood realm of mental illness, she refuses to succumb to those pressures and hide in shame.
“Its a very interesting double standard that I dont often have the ability to talk about but I certainly feel no shame about,” said Kristen.
If you suffer from mental illness, don’t be afraid to seek the help you need. Globally, approximately 350 million people suffer from depression alone,so kudos to Kristen Bell for giving a voice to those who feel they’re outcasts. You are not alone.
